FDA Warns Benicar Use May Cause Enteropathy, GI Problems
On July 3, 2013, the FDA announced Benicar (marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor, and in the generic form as olmesartan medoxomil) would receive a label update to reflect the risk of sprue-like enteropathy. According to the FDA Safety Announcement, this GI disorder can cause symptoms that include severe, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss. The condition may take months or years to develop and may require hospitalization, the agency said.
The link between Benicar and enteropathy was first uncovered in 2012. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that over a three-year period, 22 patients taking Benicar displayed symptoms suggestive of celiac disease; however, blood tests for the patients did not support this diagnosis. When patients stopped taking the drug, their GI symptoms improved, according to one of the authors of the study. Several months later, researchers from the American College of Gastroenterology noted that olmesartan, the active ingredient in Benicar, had been linked to an additional 40 cases of sprue-like enteropathy.
Can I File a Benicar Lawsuit?
Our Benicar law firm can help determine whether you can file a lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo, the maker of Benicar. Our attorneys can also discuss whether you may have a viable claim against manufacturer of Benicar for selling a drug with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, or for their Daiichi’s alleged failure to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of sprue-like enteropathy.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?
If the lawsuit is successful, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your GI disorder, as well as damages for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and even for lost wages. In addition, filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s maker accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.
