WHAT IS LOW TESTOSTERONE THERAPY?

Testosterone therapy, also known as “low T treatment” is prescribed to men to combat the natural decline in testosterone as they age. It allegedly helps combat low sex drive, builds muscle mass and prevents bone density loss.

Millions prescriptions for testosterone are written in the United States every year. Testosterone therapy is most often administered as a gel, patch or injection. The following products treat low testosterone:

  • AndroGel – Produced by AbbVie
  • Androderm – Produced by Actavis, Inc. (formerly Watson Pharmaceuticals)
  • Axiron – Produced by Eli Lilly and Company
  • Bio-T-Gel – Produced by Teva Pharmaceuticals
  • Delatestryl – Produced by Indevus Pharmaceuticals
  • Depo-Testosterone – Produced by Pharmacia & Upjohn Company
  • Fortesta – Produced by Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Striant – Produced by Columbia Laboratories

RISKS OF TESTOSTERONE THERAPY

Men certain preexisting health risks who were also undergoing Low-T Therapy had the greatest increased risk of stroke, heart attack or death, according to the study. Some of the issues that have been found to potentially elevate the risk of men undergoing testosterone treatments included, plaque buildup, artery blockage, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. As a result, the testosterone therapy study authors cautioned physicians to prescribe low testosterone treatments with more caution.

AGGRESSIVE TESTOSTERONE TREATMENT MARKETING

Both medical professionals and consumer advocates have expressed concerns about the aggressive direct marketing to the public. Given the significant medical risks associated with low testosterone treatment, some medical providers feel that the Low-T marketing campaigns do not relay the actual risks involved.

AbbVie, Inc., the manufacturer of AndroGel, a heavily marketed testosterone supplement, issued a statement in response to the study, acknowledging testosterone treatments may result in serious problems for people who have heart, kidney or lung disease.
